Gamification in Tourism and Hospitality Sector: A Narrative Literature Review and Research Directions
Abstract
This paper presents a narrative literature review on gamification in the tourism and hospitality (T&H) sector. Out of 61 examined studies, 55 papers studied the importance of adopting gamification in the T&H sector as it transforms tourism and promotes sustainable travel practices. This benefits all parties, namely, app designers, service providers, and tourists or players neglecting the fact that including motivational affordances in tourism apps is crucial for the fulfillment of basic psychological needs, which in turn induces users’ loyalty. Though, researchers have searched in a number of databases to reveal whether gamification literature in the T&H sector provided enough examinations for gameful affordances and their ultimate effects on psychological outcomes. Researchers declared that longitudinal data are required.
